Community Rides

Trailnet community rides center on encouraging and enabling people of all ages and abilities to get outside and get active. The focus is fun, safety, appreciation of our communities, and spreading the love of bicycling! If you are seeking a family-friendly bicycle ride in a safe and encouraging environment, these rides are for you.

The 2011 community ride season is over but we’ve left the information about them available below.

The 2012 community ride season will begin next April. The 2012 community ride calendar will be posted in March.

 
April 2, 2011 – Rock Hollow Rails and Trails Adventure

Route: 12 miles
Features: Master the mountain on Trailnet’s inaugural mountain bike ride. Join us for a group mountain bicycle ride, led by Gateway Off-Road Cyclists, through Rock Hollow and down the Al Foster Trail to Castlewood State Park. The group ride leaves at 10:00 a.m., but you are welcome to create your own bike or hike adventure on the Rock Hollow and Al Foster trails. Stroll or bike alongside the Meramec River, and the Wabash, Frisco & Pacific Railway.

April 17, 2011 – Pedal for the Planet

Terrain: Flat with some hills
Features: Save the planet and use pedal power as your mode of transportation at this event that celebrates Earth Day. Explore some of the natural ecosystems of Forest Park on your own or join the naturalist-led group tour at 9:30 a.m. Trailnet will offer helmet fittings and FREE helmets to the first 50 youth in need. Route map provided at registration. SAG support ends at 11:30 a.m. After the bike ride enjoy the Earth Day Festival in Forest Park.

Route includes the Riverfront Trail, Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing underground railroad site, Branch Street, 14th Street improvements at Crown Square, and the Old North Grocery Co-op. The Freedom Ride begins at the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing Celebration and takes cyclists on a tour of sites that played a significant role in shaping the African-American heritage of our nation. The ride returns in time for the re-enactment of the 1855 slave freedom crossing. The Mary Meachum Fun Ride is a bike rodeo-style event for kids and parents alike! We’ll also have helmet fittings and free helmets for the first 50 youth in need.

Complete the route on your own or join the group-led interpretive tour. The last stop is Crown Candy Kitchen, where you can buy a sweet treat. The ride finishes before dark.

Features: Cahokia was the largest prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico and was a religious, political, economic and cultural center. This group-led ride, including stops for historic interpretation, closely follows the route taken by this prehistoric civilization as they traveled between “mound cities” and across the Mississippi River.

Features: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, St. Louis’ West End (the Central West End and a few blocks to the north) was home to a surprisingly large number of writers who became part of the American Literary Tradition. We’ll visit their former homes and read short selections of their work, while riding through one of the most architecturally fascinating neighborhoods in the region.

Riders will follow portions of both Grant’s Trail and Bike St. Louis routes. After the ride, stay and enjoy music, food, and shopping at the Kirkwood Farmer’s Market and the Kirkwood

Bellefontaine Cemetery is located on West Florissant Ave., a Bike St. Louis route.
