New Initiatives

In August 2000, the national model for a Safe Routes to School program was implemented in Marin County California by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition. The program was funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a means to reduce traffic congestion around schools and promote healthy alternatives, including walking and biking to school. Since then, the number of Safe Routes to School (SR2S) programs has increased around the country, and Trailnet has implemented one for the St. Louis bi-state region.

All SR2S programs integrate health, fitness, traffic relief, environmental awareness and safety under one program. These programs provide an opportunity to work closely with your school and your community to create a healthy lifestyle for children and a safer and cleaner environment for everyone.
